Project co-funded by the European Union and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region
We are pleased to announce the launch and acceleration of the APERIO project, dedicated to the development of an industrial neutron imaging system for the non-destructive testing of batteries, hydrogen systems, and electrochemical components.
The project has recently received a major and strategic public grant of up to €903,516.45, complementing the funding already secured under the France 2030 / PIA4 program for the engineering and feasibility study phases of the project.
This new support will accelerate industrial investments as well as the development of a first operational demonstrator.
Understanding What Conventional Inspection Methods Cannot See
The APERIO project aims to develop advanced neutron imaging solutions capable of observing internal phenomena that remain inaccessible to conventional inspection methods.
Thanks to the sensitivity of neutrons to hydrogen and light elements, this technology makes it possible to visualize in real time:
- fluid distribution,
- internal defects,
- degradation mechanisms,
- as well as electrochemical behavior inside complex systems.
The objective is to provide industrial companies and researchers with new tools to better understand, characterize, and improve critical energy systems.

Advanced Test Benches Combined with Neutron Imaging
Beyond the imaging technology itself, APERIO also includes the development of advanced test benches dedicated to:
- fuel cells,
- electrolyzers,
- battery cells,
- and electrochemical systems.
These platforms will enable systems to be tested under representative operating conditions while correlating physical measurements such as pressure, temperature, current, and voltage with data generated by neutron imaging.
This combined approach paves the way for more advanced diagnostics, improved reliability, and accelerated development cycles.
Supporting Industrial Innovation and Technological Sovereignty
APERIO is part of a broader ambition to contribute to the development of a French and European industrial ecosystem focused on advanced imaging, non-destructive testing, and strategic decarbonization technologies.
Alongside this public support, GEMESIS is also finalizing an additional €2 million fundraising round combining equity financing and bank debt in order to accelerate the technological, industrial, and commercial deployment of the project.
A Collaborative Project
We would like to thank the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region for its support, as well as Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Entreprises for its guidance and continued assistance throughout the development of the project.
We also thank our partner Exosens, with whom we are developing an industrial vision for neutron imaging dedicated to practical applications in the fields of energy, hydrogen, batteries, and defense.
This project also relies on collaborations with technical, scientific, and industrial stakeholders involved in the development of next-generation industrial imaging solutions.
